CASE Assistance from CSUSB with
Applying for Credentials
It is the responsibility of each credential candidate to insure that he/she meets the requirements for the credential being sought. A credential analyst at the school, institution or district interested in employing a teacher should be able to provide some information and assistance. The Credential Processing Office in the College of Education at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) can help students who take ECTS courses (or who have taken EVOC courses) at CSUSB in the following ways:

  1. If you have not yet applied for a PRELIMINARY Designated Subjects Teaching Credential, you can telephone 909-537-5609 or e-mail mcordero@csusb.edu and request that a complete application packet for a PRELIMINARY Designated Subjects Teaching Credential be mailed to you. When you receive the application packet, be sure to read all of the directions very carefully and comply with all of the items on the checklist that comes with the application.

NOTE: It is best to wait to apply for the PRELIMINARY credential until you actually have an offer of employment as a teacher. Usually any ROP that hires you will be better able to process your PRELIMINARY credential than any other agency.

Everyone interested in a Designated Subjects Credential is encouraged to complete all of the ECTS courses as soon as possible, and anyone who is able to complete them before applying for their PRELIMINARY credential will have distinct advantages, both in applying for teaching positions and in their teaching situation.

  2. If you have a PRELIMINARY Designated Subjects Teaching Credential and complete the ECTS courses for that credential at CSUSB, you can request a verication of the completion of your course work requirements.

  3. If you have a PRELIMINARY Designated Subjects Teaching Credential and have completed the ECTS (or EVOC) courses at CSUSB that are needed for that credential, you can contact Credential Processing Office (same phone and e-mail as above) and request that the complete application packet for the CLEAR Designated Subjects Teaching Credential be sent to you. When you have everything indicated on the checklist that comes with the packet, Credential Processing Office will then submit your application for the CLEAR credential to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).

NOTE: Applying for the CLEAR credential should be done at least three months (or more) before your PRELIMINARY Designated Subjects Teaching Credential expires! It is always best to check with the credential person at the ROP where you are teaching before contacting Credential Processing Office (especially if you do not live in the San Bernardino area and are doing the EVOC courses via the Distance Learning Option).

  4. Effective 6/2010, the old Preliminary Career Technical Education full-time/part-time credentials will no longer be recommended by CSUSB for issuance by C.T.C. Current Preliminary credential holders may continue to upgrade to a Clear credential until 8/31/2013 or transition into the new Career Technical Education (SB 1104) credential program.
