US Constitution Requirement
for all
California Teaching Credentials
![]()
The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requires:Completion of a two semester unit (or three quarter unit) course in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution OR passage of an examination in the subject given by a regionally accredited college or university.
Most U.S. History courses offered by accredited community colleges and universities will serve to meet this requirement (check with the credential analyst who is processing your credential).
An alternative to completing a whole course is the U.S. Constitution Test Prep and Test offered through the College of Extended Learning at California State University, San Bernardino. In any event, anyone applying for a California Designated Subjects Teaching Credential should complete this requirement either before they apply for the credential or not later than one year from the date of issue on their preliminary credential.
